Character Concept: Shad “Farmer’s Marketeer”

Description: Shad the Farmers' Marketeer has made his name for himself among the local fruit-mongers. His knowledge of the wheres-and-whats of all manner of fruits is legendary. In fact, Shad has written a book on fruit power. Yes, yes! This is “The” Shad of Shadrick's Almanac of Fruit Far and Wide. Shad was invited to the Melon Monastery of Marvelous Monks to teach...and learn...how each fruit can enhance the natural, universal Ki that powers the monk's great feats. A bite of banana fuels his Fists of Fury. A nibble of star fruit makes him Dodge like a frisky feline. Some peaches? Yes, sir! They bring the speed to the whacka-pows!

Personality: Okay? Right? Shad knows his fruit and is often so damn pompous and arrogant about it. Most don't need to know Alton's acidic levels of kiwi, and its effects on Ki they don’t have. But he insists on sharing his knowledge with the ignorant.

History: Shad grew up in an apple orchard. When he was little bitty, a magic fruit fell on his head, and then told him a sacred epic poem. He unbelievably remembered every word but kept his knowledge secret. Since that fateful day, he has been the Fruit Master, perhaps the only Fruit Master, in the world.

Motivation: To discover more exotic fruits and to discover how to use them to further enhance his Ki!

Monster Variant: Huntsmen

Lost/Changed Features: Size becomes medium, any humanoid race, any alignment, fey ancestry, new spell list, spider climb, sunlight sensitivity, web walker, bite.

New Spell list:

At will: alarm

2/day each: goodberry, ensnaring strike

ACTIONS

Hunting Trap (3/Day). The huntsmen can use an action to set up a trap with a saw-toothed steel ring that snaps shut when a creature steps on a pressure plate in the center. The trap is affixed by a heavy chain to an immobile object, such as a tree or spike driven into the ground. The trap can be spotted with a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check. A creature that steps on the plate must succeed on a DC 15 saving throw or take 4d4 piercing damage and stop moving. Thereafter, until the creature breaks free of the trap, its movement is limited by the length of the chain (typically 3 feet long). A creature can use its sanction to make a DC 15 Strength or Thieves' tool check, freeing itself or another creature within its reach on a success. Each failed check deals 1d4 piercing damage to the trapped creature.

Shrapnel Trap (3/Day). The huntsmen can use an action to set up a trap that bursts with caltrops or ball bearings when a creature steps on a pressure plate attached to it. The trap is a spring-loaded wooden sphere filled with caltrops or ball bearings. When a trap is triggered each creature within 5 feet of it must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 2d10 piercing damage on a failed save and half as much on a successful one. Additionally, the area becomes covered by the shrapnel the huntsmen has chosen.

Ball Bearings. Any creature that enters the area must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or fall prone. A creature moving through the area at half speed doesn’t make the save.

Caltrops. Any creature that enters the area must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or stop moving this turn and take 1 piercing damage. Taking this damage reduces the creature’s walking speed by feet until the creature regains at least 1 hit point. A creature moving through the area at half speed doesn’t need to make the save.

REACTIONS

Tactical Retreat. When the huntsmen hit points lower than half its maximum, it can use its reaction to move up to its speed without provoking an opportunity attack. As part of the reaction, it may drop a bag of ball bearings or caltrops before, after or during its movement.

Encounter: Assist the Sage Wardens

The Sage Wardens, a collection of druids have recently had the area surrounding their Verbena Grove vandalized by a dwarven settlement. The Wise One, a female elf druid named Lothelye has attempted to speak with the settlers about moving their settlement to a new location away from the grove. But the dwarves are stubborn and insist the area has a high concentration of valuable mining deposits. Odag Diamondpick, a male dwarf veteran, leads the group of 50 miners. He is pig-headed and refuses to miss out on such a great find.

Odag has hired an adventuring party to ward off any attempts by the druids or Lothelye to block their mining operation. Lothelye seeks any who can destroy the mining machines and the mines and scare off Odag and his crew until they are leagues away from the beautiful purple grove.

Magic Item: Braces of Blades (Wyrmworks)

Dungeon Master Tip: Dangerous Camping

As DMs, many of us tend to find random encounters a bit dull and unnecessary. But, they can be powerful storytelling tools for your Dungeons & Dragons games. You can make your characters appreciate hostels and inns far more by adding dangerous or threatening encounters while they sleep in the wilderness. This could be a simple roll of a d20. On a 1-10 something negative happens on an 11-18 nothing happens and on a 19 or 20 something positive happens. This simple adjustment will constantly remind the players of the benefits of a tavern and inn. Especially if they are unable to get a good night's rest.

Player Tip: Don’t be a Dick Learn about it (Limitless Heroics)

When playing a character with specific symptoms, to get the most benefit, learn more about those real-world symptoms or, even if playing fantasy symptoms, the real-world symptoms they’re based on. Look them up on recognized medical websites or Wikipedia. Even better, find people for whom those symptoms are part of life, and ask them about their experience. Note that this isn’t always easy, as part of life for a disabled person is explaining their symptoms ad nauseum to medical professionals, family members, friends, coworkers, and many more, and it’s exhausting, but online communities like Reddit’s r/disability or r/Disabled_dungeons or subreddits dedicated to specific disabilities, websites dedicated to specific disabled communities, or Wyrmworks Publishing’s show, Gaining Advantage, can help you.

At the same time, part of learning is recognizing that you don’t know everything and won’t always get it right. Be patient with others, and be patient with yourself. No one should expect you to know everything. I talked to dozens of people about their symptoms in addition to hundreds of hours of research to write this book, and I welcome the opportunity to learn and grow. You just need to care and value people.

D&D Artificer necromancer reanimating a corpse

Sky breakers are an order of knights who protect the skies from the beasts above. Through masterful martial training and a touch of magic, the world around them becomes theirs to command. Founded by the mage knight Gunduik Zeeinos, she was the first to be titled Sky Breaker after she defended her kingdom from a dragon attack with her spear and magic. Her unique magic and fighting style focused on the manipulation of gravity on objects and creatures. This became the foundation of her order.
