WotC Announces ‘New Evolution’ Of D&D Coming In 2024
In a panel on the Future of Dungeons & Dragons, Wizards of the Coast (WoTC) announced that they’ve been working on a “New Evolution” of the core books, coming in 2024. As D&D Celebration 2021 wrapped up this year, WotC ran a panel titled “The Future of D&D.” At its head were some of the biggest names in game design. Head of D&D Ray Winninger along with Chris Perkins, Liz Schuh, and Jeremy Crawford. The panel gives us an exciting look at what is to come in the next few years when it comes to D&D.
The panel opens up by discussing revisiting some fan favorites from the past, much like they did with Ravenloft. Personally, I hope to see Planescape. It seems D&D has delved greatly in the multiverse so I’m hopeful. Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse just has my dice trembling with excitement. On top of that, they are writing two brand new settings never before seen that are in development. But the big news of the night was that Wizards of the Coast is planning to release new versions of the core D&D Rulebooks in 2024. Since D&D mechanics and styles are constantly evolving and changing. So, it makes sense that they want to redo the structure, format, and layout of the core books that are over ten years old. What’s great is that the change comes just in time for the game’s 50th Anniversary.

This change is great in my opinion. Anyone who has been paying any attention, WoTC has been releasing playtest material and questionnaires for some time now. This shows that they are ‘listening’ to the fans and taking into account what it is we want to see more of. This sort of feedback allows us to critique the game in a myriad of ways. Chris Perkins makes several points on making the books clearer and more “digestible” for the Dungeon Master. The goal overall seems to just make the game easier to run and adapt for your own needs. Chris mentions changing up the form factor of how they are delivered based on the audience. I’m excited to see where this goes as a consumer.
Details are sparse, of course, and the panelists were being quite mysterious–but in a nutshell, the panelists said that work on the new books began earlier this year. It’s clear by their avoiding the word “Edition". Instead, calling them “New Versions” and “New Evolution”, then topping it off as being “backwards compatible”. This sounds a lot to me a lot like what they did with 3.0 and 3.5. One of my favorite changes is to spellcasting monsters and their ridiculous lists. Now slimmed down to a spellcasting action that narrows down their features and focus.
We’ve seen steady rules adjustments and game improvements across a variety of different books since the 5th Edition’s release nearly a decade ago. It’s easy to imagine a new version of the core rules that uses new adjustments of classes, monsters, spells and so much more fun. I am certainly interested in the quality of life changes, like monsters being in alphabetical order and not hidden under a subtype. Seems small, but damn if that isn’t gonna be easier for me to find. Haha. Also, Space Hamsters? Is that a Spelljammer hint? Hell yeah! I’m down!
